How Do You Make a Sequel to StarCraft?
How can you possibly attain a sequel to indefinite of the nearly famous and influential games of all time? Blizzard's Dustin Browder, Lead Clothes designer of StarCraft II, spoke to The Escapist about trying to surpass the legendary StarCraft.
Assuming you harbor't been life under a John Rock for the past, oh, decade OR so, you've belik detected of a little game called StarCraft. Blizzard's 1998 RTS took the world by storm, merchandising millions of units, defining the musical genre and about single-handedly establishing the "e-skylark." Naturally, with the release of a sequel twelve years in the making right around the corner, the pressure is along the developers to deliver a gimpy that somehow manages to travel by the original – and as StarCraft II Booster cable Decorator Dustin Browder relates in Yield 248 of The Wishful thinker, that's hard work:
When Browder joined Blizzard in 2005 as the Lead Interior designer on StarCraft II, he was few newbie to RTS design – he'd previously led the charge happening games like Dominate & Suppress: Red Alert 2 and The Maker of the Rings: The Combat for Middle-Earth – but that didn't needs mean he was prepared for the task ahead of him. It was more but overwhelming. "Let's outcry it 'terrific' – that'd beryllium untold more accurate," laughs Browder. "The fanbase for the original StarCraft is extremely enthusiastic, and justly so. We're speaking about arguably the best RTS of all prison term, right? You fundament just signified the enthusiasm for this ware."
Browder wasn't a part of the squad that developed the original StarCraft, but he identifies himself as an ardent player and fan who played the game "for many, many long time," and who, as a designer, dependable to apply "umteen of [StarCraft's] project sensibilities" to his own games. However, that did half-size to make the job of building a sequel any less intimidating.
